Nervous Patients

Feeling anxious about going to the dentist is very common even for routine treatment. We encourage you to communicate openly about anxiety and become familiar with what treatment to expect and options that are available.

Here at Callan Dental Practice, a little TLC goes a long way. Our entire team is specially trained in caring for nervous patients. We are here to listen to your needs, concerns and answer all your questions. We will take the time to explain every step of your treatment in a language that is easy to understand.

We make you feel comfortable and relaxed

On your first appointment you will be met and treated in a friendly, calm and warm manner. You will never be judged or made feel ashamed or embarrassed of any phobias you may have. We can meet for an initial consultation to get to know one another. In subsequent appointments we will take one step at a time together at your pace. Our dentists are specially trained in the most advanced techniques available and have invested in specialist equipment designed to eliminate any pain during treatment. In addition, we offer many relaxation aids such as ceiling mounted TVs equipped with wireless headphones – allowing you to take your mind off the treatment by watching your favorite program. Your dentist will carry out your treatment without you seeing or hearing a thing.

Painless Injections

We know that patients hate getting injections so Callan Dental Practice has invested in the Wand® so our patients can experience pain free injections. The Wand ® is a small hand piece that looks like a pen and is controlled by a computer delivery system allowing the dentist to numb even the most difficult tooth virtually painlessly!

Sedation Dentistry

Imagine not being afraid of going to the dentist. Imagine being able to accomplish good dental health in as little as one or two appointments. This is what Sedation Dentistry can do for you. You’ll be able to smile with confidence and chew your food without pain. If you’ve been putting off years of dental work, sedation dentistry can change your life.

We will review your medical history before starting any treatments, and will explain the various types of sedation available and which would work best for you.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious Sedation, known as ‘Laughing Gas’, is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which you inhale and quickly leads to a pleasant, relaxing feeling. You will remain conscious all the time. Although you may feel a little drowsy, you will not feel any pain or discomfort. You inhale the laughing gas through a nosepiece, which is very comfortable. You can’t overdose on the gas and there are no after-effects what so ever.

I.V. Sedation

For those who are very nervous or are undergoing more lengthy procedures, we also offer IV sedation. This involves the use of a sedative and provides a much more profound reduction in anxiety. It eliminates most if not all memory of the procedure. This is a very effective method of sedation for anxious patients and we are very proud to be one of the few practices in Ireland able to offer this procedure.

IV sedation is very safe and you do not need to fast before your appointment. However you will require an escort to accompany you for several hours after your treatment. Anyone in good health is a suitable candidate for IV sedation, provided they are not phobic of needles in the hand/arm and have visible veins.

IV sedation will allow even the most nervous patients to achieve full dental health in as little as one or two appointments.
